Founded in 1997 with headquarters in Changzhou, China., by CEO Gao Jifan. In 2006, Trina Solar reached a milestone when it was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange as (NYSE: TSL). As of December, 2008, the company was ISO 14001-cerfiticated. In 2010 the company became a full member of PV Cycle.  Since 2011 Trina Solar has been repeatedly listed as a Fortune 100 fastest growing companies for several years in a row.

By 2014, Trina Solar reached a new milestone of shipping over 1 GW in a single quarter. In the same year, the company broke the solar cell efficiency world record 7 times. For 2014, the company shipped PV modules with a total output of 11 GW, thus making Trina Solar the top panel supplier globally as IHS reported.  Since then Trina Solar has grown to become of the world’s best and most reliable vertically integrated solar panel manufacturer.

Trina Solar leads the industry in research and development with over 1200 solar PV patents filed to date. Moreover, in 2016 Trina was awarded a Silver Rating in the global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance survey conducted by independent rating agency EcoVadis.
